Exhibition

Cineál designed an outdoor exhibition staged across three public spaces in Wicklow Town - Black Castle, Barrow Green and at the beginning of the Murrough River Walk.  The exhibition was experienced by walking through the town, to the different sites where visitors discovered a series of photographs, each of which was accompanied by audio recordings of interviews and sounds of the places where the photos were taken.

Wicklow town was explored through a practice of walking and close observation of the everyday routines and activites of the town. We identified a number of public locations where the exhibition could be staged and encountered by locals and visitors alike.

The locations were also chosen to bring attention to the character of Wicklow, its heritage landscape and the importance of its public spaces to the life of the town.

Each location was carefully surveyed and the exhibition display frames were arranged in different spatial layouts to tie in existing paths, make spaces to gather and to emphasise special views to the town, sea and river.

The portraits were then carefully arranged so that the thread of participants and their chosen places could be read sequentially.

Exhibition stands were made from a series of interlocking timber frames. Three connecting modules repeat and fixings are minimal and mechanical (no glue) so that they can be easily demounted and reassembled. The portraits themselves were displayed like street posters, pasted onto the panels.

Hardwood douglas fir was sourced from a local lumber mill. Upon disassembly, the frames were delivered to UCD for re-use at the architecture building lab and for other exhibitions.
